Miami Terminal Railfan Series: Iris Interlocking - Friday, October 1, 2010

I drove down to Hialeah to see what, if anything, was going on in the yard and if there was evidence of a possible CSX rock train for later that night. After spending nearly an hour listening to my scanner and monitoring my ATCS mobile kit from the Tri-Rail station at NW 79 Street, I noticed FEC 222 was lined across the diamond at Iris. I left the Metrorail Transfer station where I was parked and drove the two short blocks south to the CSX/FEC crossing. As I arrived, I noticed FEC 222 and P635 slowly approaching the diamond. P635 got it first, but before 222 could get going, P640 showed up in the opposite direction and stole the signal away from 222 who was forced to stop. After P640 cleared the diamond, FEC 222 with its pair of GP40-2s was finally able to get the heavy rock/pig train over the diamond and on toward Bowden. Listen to those 16-645E3 prime movers go through the notches as the hogger gets his train up to speed.
